President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries that he said support “anti-American” policies of the BRICS group of emerging economies.
“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Sunday. “There will be no exceptions to this policy.”
BRICS—an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—now has 11 members after it expanded last year to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Their leaders are currently in Brazil for a two-day meeting.
Trump also posted Sunday that he will start sending out “UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World” starting noon ET Monday. After a 90-day pause on the elevated “Liberation Day” tariffs, the deadline for the U.S. to negotiate new deals with a host of trading partners is Wednesday.
So far, the U.S. has only struck deals with two countries—the UK, which was never targeted with a higher “reciprocal” tariff, and Vietnam. Trump announced last week that Vietnamese officials agreed to a trade deal in which goods produced in the country and sent to the U.S. will have a 20% tariff, while those shipped to Vietnam and then to the U.S. will face 40%.
