Tesla’s (TSLA) sales in the European Union (EU) tumbled for a fifth consecutive month in May, even though overall new battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations kept rising.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, Tesla’s EU new car registrations, which serve as a proxy for sales, plunged almost 41% year-over-year in May to 8,729 vehicles, and have dropped 45% over the first five months of 2025 to 50,413. Tesla’s percentage of new car registrations in the EU fell to 0.9% in May from 1.6% a year earlier.

Combining EU sales with those from the U.K., Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland, Tesla’s new car registrations tumbled almost 28% in May to 13,863 vehicles.

Tesla’s EU sales declines continued in May even though overall BEV registrations in the bloc surged 25% year-over-year.

Tesla shares, which entered Wednesday down almost 16% this year, are little changed in premarket trading.
